The Grand Canal, Venice’s most famous waterway, slices through the city in a giant S-shape, defining borders for most of the city’s sestieri (districts). Several bridges cross the canal, among them the mighty Rialto Bridge and the Accademia Bridge.
The Grand Canal is Venice’s busiest water thoroughfare, packed with vaporetto (water taxis), gondolas and private boats. A tour of the canal reveals a wide range of architectural styles, including Renaissance, Byzantine, Gothic, Baroque and modern.
