Cheap hotels near Piazza San Marco in Florence, Italy
The lovely Piazza San Marco is located close to the University of Florence and is a welcome respite in the midst of busy city life. The square is also the beating heart of the San Marco neighborhood, a quarter best known for its Accademia Gallery (home to Michelangelo’s famous David sculpture).
The Museo di San Marco, located at one end of the square, is where you can see Fra Angelico’s frescoes up close, and visit the Church and Convent of San Marco, where feisty friar Savonarola and Fra were once residents. Savonarola’s relics are buried underneath.
From the piazza, it’s easy to walk to most of Florence's neighborhoods. Most of the city's major sights are due south in the city center.
