With an enviable location—just behind Via Nazionale and a short walk from Monti—and simple but immaculate guest rooms, the two-star B&B Hotel Roma Italia Viminale (Hotel Italia) is a solid pick.

The Hotel Italia’s 23 rooms are rather small, with plain walls and crisp white bedspreads to match. Some newer rooms are located on the upper floor and in a building across the street. All rooms provide free Wi-Fi, a TV and a private bathroom with hair dryer. Note that air conditioning costs extra.

The Hotel Italia is well-connected to Rome’s historic center, which is a 15-minute walk or a short bus ride away. Termini Station is a similar distance from the hotel.

A generous breakfast of eggs, three types of bread and cake is included and served in the large, bright breakfast room. In addition to free Internet access throughout the hotel, there is a communal laptop at the reception.

Monti

The Monti neighborhood feature some of Rome's cutest winding, hilly streets. It's chockablock full of great little hidden-away bars and restaurants. In parts it's quite stylish, though the area is best known for its boho, artsy independent shops and galleries. The area's Via Serpenti is the best spot for ethnic cuisine. Cavour is the closest Metro station.

The neighborhood boasts some of Rome's most famous landmarks, churches and ruins, including the Colosseum, Trajan's Market and parts of the Roman Forum.
