Perhaps Rome’s first church to openly celebrate mass, the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere dates way back to the fourth century. The church, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is located in the picturesque Trastevere neighborhood.
The church's exterior is crowned by a sculptural depiction of Mary and a young Jesus. The church’s interior nave is characterized by a series of 22 granite columns, some Ionic and some Corinthian. There are also 13th-century mosaics in the apse as well as a number of chapels throughout the church.
