The University of Florence ("Università degli Studi di Firenze") is one of the oldest and largest universities in Italy. With its main building and offices located on the lovely Piazza San Marco, the university offers 12 academic departments (or “faculties”) and boasts more than 60,000 enrolled students.

The university’s history is rich, going back to the 14th-century Florentine Republic. Needless to say, the University of Florence has had quite a roster of notable professors and students, many of whom went on to change the world. A student named Leonardo da Vinci, for example, carried out some of his anatomy studies at the university-affiliated Santa Maria Novella Hospital.
