Holding court in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Columbia University was founded in 1754 and is the oldest university in New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. Columbia is a member of the prestigious Ivy League of eight northeastern schools.
The school had a few different homes before taking up residence in Morningside Heights in the Upper West Side, including near City Hall and in Midtown (on the site of today’s Rockefeller Center). Today’s campus is an impressive affair, centered around Low Memorial Library and a large common lawn.
Columbia’s main campus stretches from 114th to 120th Streets, between Riverside Drive and Morningside Drive. Its main gates are located at Broadway and 116th Street.
Free guided tours are offered at 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information on visiting Columbia, visit the university’s Web site.
