The Prague Metro System
The three-line metro system is easy to understand but does not serve many hotels or tourist sights. Trains run daily from 5 a.m. until midnight and usually arrive every 5-10 minutes during peak hours. The Czech word 'Vystup' designates exit.
The Prague Tram System
Trams, tramvaj, run throughout Prague and operate frequently between 5 a.m. and midnight. Late night trams run with reduced schedules. Pick up a detailed map at the tourist office.
This is also the best way to see Prague's hills and spills. Tram #22's route takes in Vinohrady and Hradcany. Night trams #51 through #58 all pass by Lazarska in Nove Mesto. However, beware of pickpockets while checking out the amazing views!
Night trams run every 30 minutes from midnight until 4:30 a.m.
Metro and Tram Tickets
Both systems are covered by one inexpensive ticket. Tickets for both may be purchased from tobacco shops, kiosks, metro stations, and hotels. You can also use one of the machines at most metro and some tram stops. Punch in 8 or 12 and you are good to go.
A short ride ticket (up to four metro stops or 20 minutes) costs CZK14. A 75-minute ride runs CZK20. Also available are one-day passes for CZK80 and three-day passes for CZK220.
It's important to stamp and validate your ticket before boarding, as plainclothes inspectors will fine you on the spot for riding without a valid ticket.
Taxi
As we make clear in our Getting Into Prague section, taxi drivers in Prague are notorious rip-off artists. Legislation is slowly but surely checking them, but you should still be careful. If you must take a taxi, do not catch one at Wenceslas Square, Národní, or outside of Obecní, where masses of taxi drivers gather. Instead, call the AAA at 14 0 14, 222 333 222, 221 102 211, or 221 111 111 and arrange a taxi ride with an English speaking representative. Always request a price estimate up front.
Official taxis will have permanently installed, lighted roof TAXI signs. Both front doors of official taxis will be festooned with signage with official rate information and the name of the taxi company. By law, taxis charge a base rate of CZK30, an additional rate of CZK20-30 per kilometer within the city of Prague and CZK5 per minute waiting in traffic or at the customer's request.
