Travel Websites Get an Upgrade
January 2008
"Who it's for: Die-hard Europe addicts What it is: A budget-hotel reviewer turned booking site Why click here? Economics and inside information. EuroCheapo not only lets you book affordable accommodations, it reviews them in 24 cities, from Athens to Seville. The write-ups are quirky and honest. Of Berlin's Hotel Pension Funk, once home to a silent-movie star, they say, 'It's not new, remodeled, or particularly spacious. But we loved the place.' Even the photos are the site's own, rather than some fancy publicist's deceptively luxurious staging. Cool feature: Travel Grams: sweet, thoughtful travel essays written by the founders' globe-trotting grandmother."

"Think twice about hotels. Eurocheapo.com offers no-nonsense reviews of budget hotels in dozens of cities; in Rome, it recommends the Suore di S. "EuroCheapo has just dramatically improved its ability to find ultra-cheapo lodgings for your next European stay. It's been around for quite some time. But prior to now, its hotel search engine was limited to surveying the prices offered by various individual low-cost hotels. Now, EuroCheapo (www.eurocheapo.com) has been modified to search other hotel search engines as well (like those of Venere.com, Booking.com, and HostelWorld.com)...However, its focus on the value-for-your-money-end of the lodging market, and honest editorial take on each property, make EuroCheapo and its new price search feature a welcome addition to the online hotel hunt."

Travelers can stretch dollars despite a strong euro
July 30, 2007
"Rethink where you travel and stay. Tom Meyers, founder of www.eurocheapo.com, a website dedicated to budget hotels in Europe, says going to less popular destinations, such as Eastern Europe or small cities, can save big money.
"I can't stop talking about Lisbon," said Meyers. It is a great sunny outdoor spot that far beats more expensive Barcelona in his estimation. Florence, he added, has more affordable hotels than Rome or Venice.

EuroCheapo adds hotel search
July 26, 2007
"The success of Eurocheapo, a hotel review website, isn't exactly the world's greatest mystery. But it certainly raises an eyebrow, because modest Internet companies aiming to please budget-conscious travelers rarely make a buck, as EuroCheapo does. Founded six years ago, the website now earns enough to afford to have three full-time workers and a handful of freelance hotel reviewers in Europe."

"Tom Meyers from EuroCheapo.com says plan your arrival when most tourists are heading home. They even have a name for it:
TOM MEYERS: "Shoulder season" is the period in between the high season and the low season. There are fewer tourists, there's better availability in the hotels. You know, if you go to Paris in August for instance, this is the peak season for tourists, but there are no French people around. But if you headed south, if you went to Rio for instance, it's winter there, but you can still go to the beaches."

Great Values in Overseas Trips

"During the summer months, locals and tourists alike exit the city to crowd nearby beaches. "Lisbon forces you to relax," says Tom Meyers, editor of the Web site Eurocheapo.com and a frequent traveler to Portugal.
A night on the town in Lisbon, where a drink is two to three euros, costs a fraction of a good time in London or Paris. "You don't return to your hotel at night feeling as if you've been robbed," Meyers says.
