Sitting in the shadow of a looming Gothic-style hospital, the Hostel U Melounu offers simple and friendly budget accommodation in Prague's Nové Město neighborhood.

The building is old, so don’t expect anything fancy. The manager Petra explained that it had been part of a winery and later was used as employee housing for the hospital. Listed as a historic property, the hostel's building retains its original name ("At the Golden Melon" in English).

The 17 rooms (three dorms and 14 private) are basic and cheerful, with plants and wicker chairs providing some atmosphere and brightly-colored duvets livening up the space. One wing boasts its own kitchen area, while the other rooms have access to a second kitchen. Two-room apartments are also available (and are popular with families). Dorm rooms are a mix of steel-framed bunk beds and single beds, each with their own reading light and small shelf. Dorms are also equipped with painted lockers to securely stash your stuff. Bathrooms, whether shared or private, are small and simple but perfectly clean. (Note that even private bathrooms are located outside of the rooms in the hallway.)

Downstairs, you'll find the compact, country-style breakfast room that doubles as a TV lounge in the evening. The reception area is quite cramped, but the U Melounu's courtyard garden is spacious and pleasant.
