This former apartment building reopened as the Hotel San Marco Palace in February 2004. We are happy to be among the first reviewers to give it a big thumbs-up. The San Marco's amenities list is substantial, and the location, though off the beaten path, is still convenient. The National Museum is less than a five-minute walk north.
The San Marco's 23 rooms are huge by budget-hotel, or for that matter, any hotel standards. A few of the bathrooms are as large as some of the double rooms we saw closer to Old Town Square. Plus, the San Marco has an elevator—big surprise in this kind of classic building.
As for the rooms, we have one question: Do you like satin? You'd better because all the San Marco, including the furniture and beds, are covered in it! Some bedspreads are mint, others are gold, but all are most definitely satin.
Be sure to check out the garden in back. It's modest but still a nice spot to sit under a tree and escape the city bustle right outside the front doors.
