From its docking point on a wharf on the outskirts of the city, the three-star Amstel Botel offers a different side of Amsterdam with views of billowing smokestacks, a former submarine protruding from the water and barges carrying their quarry to and from the great city. It's a little dystopian, and we were into it.
The 175 rooms at the Amstel Botel are simple to a fault: clean beds over fraying red carpets and small, functional private bathrooms. All rooms are equipped with a television, phone, safe and hair dryer.
Guests have access to the decks and great lounging areas complete with restaurant, bar and pool table.
The Amstel Botel is the place for an adventurous traveler. The hotel rents bicylces, and offers a complimentary ferry service to Amsterdam’s Centraal Station (the journey takes 10 minutes and ferries run twice per hour).
Breakfast is included in the room rate and Wi-Fi is free throughout.

About the Amstel Botel neighborhood
The Old Center is home to Amsterdam's main tourist attractions (with the notable exception of the most important museums). The Red Light District, Dam Square, the Royal Palace, Nieuwmarkt, and a seemingly endless supply of "coffeeshops" keep the area packed with eager—and often gawking—tourists. This is the city's touristy nerve-center. It's dirty, chaotic, crowded and, for some, enthralling.
