Nestled on a quiet corner between Place Ste-Catherine and the Grand Place, the two-star Hotel Le Chantecler is a basic 14-room hotel with reasonable rates and a noise-free atmosphere.

The rooms have a ‘70s feel (hello mirrored closet panels!) and could benefit from some renovation. Furnishings are basic and dated: Think light green wallpaper and beds donning muted pastel comforters. The majority of the rooms face the street, offering pleasant neighborhood views (hint: Check out the stacks across the way!) and all are equipped with cable television. En suite bathrooms are small but adequate, though they too could benefit from a reonovation.

The Chantecler's lobby sports an attractive breakfast café with large windows overlooking the cobblestoned street and the neighborhood's library next door. The common areas and hallways are very tidy, although a lack of natural light makes them feel a bit cramped.

In the end, the Chantecler isn't going to win any design awards, but it's in a great spot and room rates are budget-friendly.
