Located in Alonso Martinez, Hostal Asunción is near the Malasaña rock 'n roll neighborhood and lots of up-and-coming artist galleries. First off, we like the Asunción for its non-touristy location. This is the place where the cousins and friends of Madrid locals—rather than your average tourist—stay. It sits almost directly above the Metro stop, across from one of our favorite cafés in town, Santander. Rates are reasonable for services rendered, and include free Wi-Fi.
Of the ten rooms, only a few have air-conditioning. Sweaty sorts should make sure to request one of these. Eight rooms have balconies.
All rooms are aesthetically identical and run on the small size. There's little in the way of decoration, but rooms are physically comfortable and cute, to boot. Wood flooring and smart-looking white sheets lend the room a strong sense of modern minimalism. In every room, there's an oversized desk. Their massive size surprised us at first, since rooms aren't very big, but then we realized how well they save space! Large suitcases fit in them nicely, as do shoes and jackets.
The bathrooms smell like they've been scrubbed hard with cleaner. They're graced with step-up toilets, attractive blue towels, and matching Chinese-print shower curtains.
Note that the entrance to the hotel is slightly misleading, as it's not quite as modern as the rooms themselves are. We did love the reproduction of Edward Hoppers "Hotel Room" hanging behind the reception, though.
