And now for another no-frills wonder. Ladies and Gentlemen, may we present the Hostal Villar! Providing 46 rooms along the central Calle Principe, the Villar is noteworthy for its rock-bottom prices and nifty wrought-iron elevator.
Rooms are basic and clean, if a bit dreary and in need of renovation. Nonetheless, we spent three nights here and appreciated its economy, all-night reception, and central location. If you want a balcony, there are 13 street-side, balcony-clad rooms to choose from.

About the Hostal Villar neighborhood
This tiny but central neighborhood with two names is is jam-packed with people, attractions and excitement. Also known as Barrio de las Letras (or "Neighborhood of the Letters"), it was a hot spot for literary gents of Madrid's Golden Age, and remnants of literary life still abound, including the Mueseo Cervantino, the Ateneo library and plenty of theaters and bars.
