The one-star Hotel Mimosa is at the top of our cheapo list. With low rates, nice rooms, a friendly staff and a location steps from the Pantheon, really, what’s not to love?
Pros: Fabulous location. Great value. Nice rooms. Friendly service.
Cons: Simple rooms. More expensive post-renovations.
Given its location and cheap rates, the Mimosa was on our cheapo list for more than a decade, during which we praised it as a “bare bones” option. However, a 2013 change in management and a complete renovation the next year have upgraded the hotel’s rooms, adding more amenities, while also giving the rates a lift. Still, it remains one of Rome’s most affordable super-central hotels.
The 11 guest rooms line one long corridor that shoots off of the Mimosa's brightly-lit lobby. Rooms vary in size and shape but all are clean and modern, with freshly painted walls, framed artwork and Ikea-style furnishings. All rooms are now equipped with air conditioning, TV, and free Wi-Fi.
The bathrooms, all private, are simple, modern and clean. They are of an acceptable size (although we found the showers a bit small).
The Mimosa's fairly retro reception area is dominated by a strikingly large reproduction of Sandro Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus” (Nascita di Venere). A basic breakfast (coffee, juice, croissant) is included in the room rate, and served in a cheery red-and-pink breakfast room with parquet floors and trendy cafeteria-style furnishings.
Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there is an Internet station available for a fee. The pension is entirely non-smoking.
The Hotel Mimosa is well placed for exploring Rome. It’s literally around the corner from the Pantheon and within walking distance of many other major historical sites. It’s also well connected by a variety of transportation options.

About the Hotel Mimosa neighborhood
The Pantheon and Piazza Navona are located to the west of the train station and southwest of Piazza di Spagna. The area is perhaps the most visited in all of Rome. Everybody flocks to Piazza Navona for its three Bernini fountains and fancy bars and restaurants. This neighborhood features innumerable old churches and pockets of great budget value, both in terms of hotels and restaurants.
