Getting Around Vienna

Transportation in Vienna

Public transportation in Vienna is easy, efficient and famously punctual. That said, you probably won't need to board the metro or a tram to see much of the center city. Many of Vienna's tourist attractions are right inside the "Ring," the historic center of town. All public transportation runs from 5 a.m. until midnight. In addition, you can catch night buses from the very central Schwedenplatz.

U-Bahn, Bus & Tram

The public transportation system of Vienna includes an elaborate system made up of metros, trams and buses. The U-Bahn is the underground train and the S-Bahn is the suburban train. Pick up a free map at the tourist office to sort yourself out.

On trams, be sure to open doors using latches or pushing buttons. If you do not open the door on your own, it will not open and you will miss your stop. Plus you'll look like a hapless tourist. To this, you'll likely say nein, danke!

For more information, visit the (German-language) site for Vienna's public transportation system.

Tickets

Buses, trams and the metro all use the same tickets. Buy tickets from Tabak shops, station machines or Vorverkauf offices in the station. Single tickets for metro and bus journeys cost €1.70. Single tram tickets cost €2.20. Single tickets are valid for one ride, including transfers. A 24-hour Netzkarte costs €5.70 and a 72-hour Netzkarte will run you €13.60.

The Wien-Karte, or Vienna Card, costs €18.50. It includes a 72-hour travel pass and allows for minor discounts at local attractions. An 9-day card costs €27.20 and can be used for several people traveling together.

Be sure to stamp your ticket upon first use. Multiple-use passes need only be stamped once. A fine of €62 awaits those caught cheating the system.

Children under the age of 15 travel for free on Sundays and holidays and children under age six travel free at all times.

Taxi

Vienna's clean and cozy taxis are easy to flag down on the street. The daytime starting price is €2.50 and the nighttime, Sunday, and holiday starting price is €2.60. An additional €2 surcharge applies to taxis called by radio. To book a taxi via telephone in Vienna, call 31330, 40100, or 60160.

Bicycle

Your loyal EuroCheapo researchers think taking advantage of a bike-friendly town is just about the best idea around. You have not experienced Vienna until you circle the Ring on a bike via its convenient bicycle-friendly path. Bicycle Rental Hochschaubahn is located near the Prater, the amusement park on the Danube. Rental prices are €14.50/day for children and up to €21.50/day for adults. For more information, cycle your way online to the Radverleih Hochschaubahn, located at Prater 113 or visit the Radverleih Hochschaubahn website. Pedal Power, another bicycle rental outlet, is located at Ausstellungstrasse 3. They can be reached by telephone (local call) at 729 7234 and on their website. Bike rentals begin at €19 for children, €21 for students, and €27 for adults per day.
