Within Vienna, a car is the last thing you'll need. While Vienna is not a nightmare for drivers as many other big European cities are, there's simply no need to use a rental car to get around the larger metropolitan area. For jaunts outside of the city, however, especially to areas beyond the train network, a rental car will come in handy.
Renting a car in Austria involves few obvious hassles. For an economy car, a very good rate (including the very high tax of over 21%) is €170 for a three-day period. You won't need a local driver license in Austria, and nor should you require an International Driver License. Seatbelts are required for all passengers. Children under 12 years of age may not sit in the front seat unless a child's seatbelt or seat has been installed.

To get the best price, reserve a car before leaving home. Ask for an all-inclusive rate with full insurance and unlimited kilometers. Many of the less expensive rental cars in Europe will have neither air conditioning nor roll-down windows. To get the best deal, shop around, reserve ahead of time and pay in advance.
Avoid picking your rental car up at an airport, as an additional 6% tax applies to the cost of rental cars picked up or dropped off at an airport in Austria. Additional costs will apply to cars picked up in Austria and then dropped off in Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, or the Czech Republic.
