The Hotel The Crown calls itself a "friendly, family-owned place," and we agree. The Crown is owned by an English family, and Marc, who runs the hotel's reception and bar, took us on a tour.
The Crown offers three floors of bare-basic rooms above the lobby's spirited English pub. Some of the rooms are equipped with a private shower, while all share toilets. And they have sinks. Yep. Six rooms face the Voorburgwal canal, while 11 face an interior court.
The rooms we saw were all clean and furnished with simple wooden furniture. As with most old, un-renovated hotels, the Crown offers rooms that are spacious and rooms that are quite tight.
Why stay here? The Crown's location is in the heart of the Red Light District, just minutes from the Centraal Station. Its convenient for those who consider that "location," and for those who want to sleep above a happening bar scene. If this isn't you, then keep looking.
