The two-star Hotel Catalunya is a clean, well-priced spot in the heart of the Gothic Quarter. Its 40 guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a private bathroom, satellite TV, phone, safe, mini-fridge and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has an elevator.

The basics

• Simple, comfortable rooms. The Hotel Catalunya’s rooms aren’t the most luxurious (guests say that they are small and some can be dark or stuffy), but they come with all the necessary amenities, and guests confirm that they are clean.

• Location, location, location. You don’t get much more central (or charming) than the Gothic Quarter.

• Decent value. The hotel’s rates aren’t the cheapest in the city, but when you factor in location and services, this is a solid pick for all-around value.

• Some complaints. Some guests complain about interior windows (ask for a street-facing room), a simple breakfast and issues with water pressure. However, most are overall happy with the level of service in combination with the price.

• Some noise. One of the compromises of staying in a coveted, popular area is that there will be street noise (pack earplugs).

• Breakfast is sometimes included in the room rate (check when booking).

• Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Location

The Hotel Catalunya is located within a 10-minute walk from many of Barcelona’s more popular attractions, including Plaça Catalunya, the Ramblas and the Cathedral.

• Metro: Located just a few blocks away, Plaça Catalunya is a major transit hub with access to the Red/L1 line and many buses. The Urquinaona stop, on the Orange/L4 line, is also a quick walk away.
