The three-star Sokos Hotel Helsinki, located in the heart of Helsinki near the major museums and the best shopping and eating destinations, is convenient, simple, and chic. Rates are not always cheapo, but booking in advance can lead to some solid deals (by Helsinki standards).

The colors red, grey, and white seem to be the hotel's best friends. The décor isn't boisterous, but the hotel seems to have chosen the minimalist palette not only deliberately but proudly. The result is attractive and predictable.

The 202 guestrooms come in both standard and superior varieties. Both categories are decorated simply, with (you guessed it) red and white bedding and curtains. Artwork is limited to retro black and white prints of swanky ballroom scenes. Superior rooms are considerably more spacious, and they boast coffee and tea makers. One single room we visited was cleverly laid out, with the writing desk serving as a divider between the bed and the rest of the room. (That said, the single bathroom was positively tiny.) Bathrooms are equipped with hairdryers, and superior rooms provide bathrobes. Half of the rooms have bathtubs (ask ahead).

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and breakfast is included in the nightly rate. The Sokos Hotel Helsinki has two restaurants, Fransmanni and the more laid-back Memphis, attached to the building.
