One of London’s great museums, the National Gallery houses more than 2,300 paintings from the 13th century to the 1900s. Simply put, it's a “must visit” for any first-time visitor to London.

The gallery—located on Trafalgar Square—got its start when the British government bought a private collection in 1824 and continued to add to it. Today, the world-class collection includes works by Da Vinci, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Raphael and Rembrandt.

Happily, museum admission is free, though the museum does charge for special exhibits. The National Gallery is open daily from 10 a.m to 6 p.m and open until 9 p.m. on Friday. It is closed December 24, 25, 26 and January 1.
