The Hotel Alpi is about a 10-minute walk from the Stazione Termini. Elegant décor in the lobby and lounge areas stays true to the "Liberty" style building. Suites are way out of Cheapo territory, but the Alpi's standard rooms can be a good deal during the low season.
Rooms don't have a lot of personality, but they benefit from wall-to-wall carpeting or parquet floors, large windows, and pleasant furnishings. Some have "fresco" paintings on the walls, while others offer Jacuzzi tubs or massage showers.
In some of the smaller rooms, the shower is in a separate room from the toilet and sink. Single rooms are decently sized, which is a relief after seeing so many cubby holes elsewhere.
The plentiful breakfast buffet includes bacon! Take full advantage.

About the Alpi neighborhood
In its defense, the area north of Stazione Centrale Termini is both convenient and affordable. On the convenience front, trains heading to Fumincino airport and across Italy depart from this massive structure. The front of Termini is a tangle of bus stops, and Rome's two metro lines, as well as markets and shops. That said, the area north of Termini is not the most picturesque area in central Rome by a long shot. The semi-circle of streets north of the station is bordered by the Piazza della Republica to the west and the Villa Borghese parkland to the north. In between are hundreds of hotels and very few tourist attractions. Although always crowded and sometimes a little seedy, there is an upside to this neighborhood. Lots of competition in every hotel budget category can make for good rates.
