Conveniently located north of Termini Station, the newly renovated Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes offers a range of room types for budget travelers. And true to its name, artwork dresses up the walls throughout.
Pros: Helpful staff. Very clean. Newly renovated.
Cons: Rates unpredictable. Wi-Fi only free in public areas. Cash only.
The three-star Hotel and Hostel Des Artistes is a hybrid choice for budget travelers who want options. Whether you choose one of the art-filled three-star hotel rooms or a bed in a shared hostel room, you’ll benefit from the same friendly service and central location (a short walk from Termini Station and a 20-minute walk to the historic center).
Both hotel and hostel share a bar and TV-equipped common area, in addition to a lovely roof terrace (where guests can use free Wi-Fi).
The hotel: The 45 private rooms at Hotel des Artistes were renovated in 2014, and are today a class act, with rich red and blue fabrics and gold-framed prints. All rooms in the hotel section are equipped with air conditioning, large satellite TV, phone, safe and a private bathroom (with shower, marble counters, a bidet and a hair dryer).
Breakfast is included in the hotel’s room rate. Wi-Fi is free in the public areas, but charges apply in the rooms. Note that the hotel offers seven slightly cheaper rooms in its annex, located a three-minute walk away.
The hostel: The Hostel des Artistes takes up one floor of the hotel. The entire floor was recently renovated, and its rooms are mostly indistinguishable from the hotel rooms—except that they share bathrooms and have a fan instead of air conditioning. Otherwise, they also have a TV, and a sink.
These shared rooms are decorated in a simpler style, although they still have art hanging around, and have enough single beds to sleep two to six guests. There is one shared bathroom for every three private rooms, plus a communal shower room with plenty of stalls to be shared among the dorm guests. All bathrooms are clean and shiny, and hostel guests can buy a towel for €3.50.
Breakfast for hostel guests costs a pricey €12, but the hostel partners with local eateries: Guests can enjoy an Italian breakfast (sweet croissant and coffee, cappuccino or latte) for only €1.50 at the café across the street, and two nearby restaurants offer discounts for lunch and dinner.
Wi-Fi is available for an additional charge. Note that dorms run €15-35 per person, you must be between the ages of 18 and 35 to sleep in the hostel, and that it’s best to book these rooms directly through the hostel’s website.
Payment in cash only.

About the Hotel and Hostel des Artistes neighborhood
The largely residential area north of Stazione Centrale Termini is both convenient and affordable. Trains heading to Fumincino airport and across Italy depart from this massive station, the front of which is also a major bus and metro stop. Although not the most picturesque neighborhood in central Rome, lots of hotel competition can often mean good rates. The area is always crowded and sometimes a little seedy.
