The friendly nuns of the Suore di S. Elizabetta open 38 guestrooms in their convent to anyone that doesn't mind an 11 p.m. curfew or sleeping under a crucifix. Originally a 16th-century palace, this nunnery is located just south of the Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore. We'd call it one un-convent-ionally good deal!
Rooms in the convent are, as one would expect, simply-furnished, well-kept and super clean. Beds and furniture are modest, and rooms are equipped with telephones, though no TV (there's a TV lounge downstairs). Hallways sparkle in a stark kind of way. And, as the entire convent is non-smoking, the rooms and common areas smell fresh.
Simplicity is cast aside in the ornate breakfast room, where chandeliers hang from a spectacular 16th-century, frescoed ceiling. Good morning!
The convent is perched on a hill, so the rooftop terrace offers spectacular vistas of central Rome and the outlying mountains. Good afternoon!
And that strictly enforced 11 p.m. curfew will make sure you get a holy-night's sleep. Good night!
