The perfectly nice Art Gallery hotel was renovated in 2011 and its 18 small rooms will work for visitors who are looking for smallish, basic rooms that are clean and affordable. Ideal for couples spending most of the trip out and about, stay at this two-star for quick trips to nearby art museums and a easy walk home after a night out.
Pros: Simple and sufficient, and no strings attached. Convenient location near the Leidseplein (without the noise). Free Wi-Fi.
Cons: Compact rooms. Steep stairs. Breakfast charge (€6.50). No lounge area and small lobby.
The Art Gallery’s rooms are neat and tidy, with fresh paint and standard amenities, including a telephone, flat-screen TV and safe. All rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi. Views vary widely from room to room; make sure to ask ahead if you want balcony access or a view looking down at the Rijksmuseum.
Beds are the main attraction here, with their fluffy duvets, and small ceiling lights give off a warm and inviting hue. Keep in mind, however, that the bigger the bed the tighter the squeeze in these compact rooms. (Although the high ceilings do give the impression of a bit more space.)
The rooms present all the basics (desk, bedding, cushioned stool) in an attractive manner. Aside from perhaps a faded stain on a footrest or worn out bathroom tile rings, things are clean and spotless.
The cheapest rooms share bathrooms (and have twin beds), although all rooms are equipped with a hair dryer and toiletries. The hallway bathrooms can feel cramped, and their floors could stand to be renovated, but things are simple and sanitary. Bathtubs are a no go at the Art Gallery -- rooms are only equipped with showers.
The Art Gallery Hotel is located in an attractive Dutch townhouse just off the Leidseplein. A continental breakfast is available for €6.50 per person per day in the basement dining area. Next door is an organic lunch kitchen with light meals at a reasonable rate (opens at noon). There is a soft drink vending machine and a coffee machine in the hotel basement, but aside from the candy tray at reception, consider eating out at one of the many hotspots at Leidseplein.
The reception is always open, which is a guaranteed plus, and customers can store luggage in the secure lounge even after checking out.
Aesthetically, the Art Gallery Hotel could use a healthy splash of art: the white, cream and black color scheme can feel bland and sterile at times. But it’s a good way to show off cleanliness in a no-frills “what you see is what you get” kind of way.
Also: Watch out for the steep stairs. The old building doesn’t leave much room for handicapped-friendly hallways.
The aptly named Art Gallery Hotel is just one block away from Museumplein where the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Diamond Museum sit.
The hotel is located about one block from the busy dining and cafe square Leidseplein, which is a hub for nightlife, entertainment, concerts and dining.
To the left it’s just a ten minute walk to the Heineken Experience, and behind the hotel are beautiful walks along Amsterdam’s canal belt. The location shines best in the summer, where the nearby Vondelpark is an absolute must, and the lively terraces are ideal for a drink in the sun.
The trams that stop just in front and to the left of the hotel skims the canal belt, and it’s just a quick change to the central station. It’s not the closest spot for getting to tourist hotspots like Dam Square and Anne Frank Huis, but Tram 7 and 10 can drop you within walking distance.
Guest Reviews in Brief
All in all, guests at Art Gallery Hotel love the location. It’s away from the hustle and bustle of the center, but still surrounded by sightseeing musts and affordable eating. The 24-hour reception is a big plus, as is the friendly staff who try their best to be helpful about the city and transportation.
Size and simplicity can turn off those with fancier expectations. The €6.50 breakfast is considered steep for what’s on (or not on) the table. And even though the hotel is removed from noise of nightlife, there tends to be a high volume of street sounds and room chatter that can be heard.

About the Art Gallery Hotel neighborhood
The most elegant area within the city center, Grachtengordel South features opulent residences, mansion-lined streets and a hot nightlife scene. The area boasts both Rembrandtplein (the city's one-time butter market) and Leidseplein (a former horse and buggy drop-off point). Both squares have been reborn as hot spots for bars, clubs, restaurants and no small number of tourist traps.
