Finally—a hotel that won us over quickly and completely.
The family-owned Hostel Asterisk is a well-run, independent hotel with a healthy sense of humor. Clocks throughout the hotel display the hour in dozens of international locations, from Acapulco to Zimbabwe. And the Asterisk's personable manager, the fabulously friendly Jurrien Sterenbourg, is also a plus.
The location is central, charming, and quiet. (Though the Asterisk is just minutes from the Rijksmuseum on den Texstraat, it's still off the beaten path on a very quiet part of the street.) And the hotel is unpretentious. Rooms are bright, pretty, comfortable, and basic, with a variety of prices to choose from. Furnishings are not fancy, but they're clean. Six old-fashioned rooms boast extra touches of décor, such as chandeliers and crown molding. Rooms without private bathrooms share facilities with only one other room and not the entire hallway. Kiddie-size cots, high chairs, hair dryers, and kettles are available on request. The hotel has notoriously steep stairs, but thankfully there's also an elevator.
Our conclusion? This winning hotel is a good value with loads of room types for every budget.
