Rembrandt Classic Hotel

Staying at the Rembrandt Classic Hotel is definitely not considered "roughing it." This 111-room, three-star hotel is central and convenient. Spanning the land between the Herrengracht and Singel canals, just five minutes from Dam Square, this area is always bustling with activity though, from the peaceful, nearly soundproof rooms, you'd never notice it. (Last we stayed here, in fact, we only saw a tree-lined canal and a sprinkling of boaters and bicyclists from our window.)

The Rembrandt spreads across several 17th- and 19th- century townhouses, which were joined together, restored, and converted into hotel rooms. As the hotel faces a canal in both the front and back, about 30 percent of the rooms have views of the water.

Our room had a very high, wood-beamed ceiling, fresh carpet, writing area, comfy bed, large television with built-in radio, telephone, trouser press, and dresser. And the spacious bathroom had both a tub and a shower. Overall, rooms aren't exactly screaming with character, but we did notice—as of our last visit—that they've added new carpets and bedspreads.

When reserving, request a canal view. They do grant them when possible, though rooms on the interior courtyard are perfectly fine. Note that the hotel offers many Internet specials. We took advantage of this and purchased our room for €50 less than the listed price (including taxes and breakfast).
