The best part about the two-star Hostal Residencia Neutral is its location: It’s one of the only hostels in the area, and the only one along this part of posh Rambla Catalunya (not to be confused with La Rambla!). Rates for the basic rooms seemed on the steep side here, but you’re paying for location.
The Neutral’s 31 large rooms are far simpler than its bizarre mirrored lobby, with its bottom-lit fake ferns and seascape oil paintings. We’d venture to guess that the rooms have not been redecorated since 1960 and the tiled floors may just date back to the late 1800s. Each room has a small writing desk, television, telephone and free Wi-Fi. They are not air conditioned but fans are provided. Many rooms have balconies (ask ahead) with great views of this always bustling area, filled with shoppers, business people and dog-walkers.
The only sections of the Neutral that have enjoyed makeovers are the bathrooms, which are bright, modern and sparkling. Four have bathtubs. Towels and basic toiletries are provided, and hair dryers are available at the front desk.
Rates have gone up noticeably since our last visit to the Neutral, and we did not notice corresponding improvements to the bare-bones rooms. But the owners, Señores Ramon and Albert, are very friendly, and seem to go out of their way to help guests feel at ease.
Breakfast is available for an additional charge. In addition to free Wi-Fi throughout, there is an Internet station (€1 for 20 minutes).
All told, it’s mostly about convenience at the Neutral, which is placed one block from Barcelona’s pricey well-to-do shopping street, Pssg. de Gracia, and in an easy spot for catching the Metro, buses and taxis. Eating is effortless here, and it’s a terrific idea to have at least one meal at one of the outdoor cafés on Rambla Catalunya. Unlike La Rambla, which is a tourist trap for eating out, Rambla Catalunya is popular with Catalans and foreigners alike.

About the Hostal Residencia Neutral neighborhood
The Eixample is located just North of El Raval and the Gothic Quarter. It's home to Barcelona's most expensive shopping, swankiest residences and best examples of Catalonian Modernist architecture, with its wild ornamentation and extreme Art Nouveau flair. Antoni Gaudí's world-famous Sagrada Familia cathedral can be found here.
