Berlin City Lounge Hostel & Guesthouse

The EuroCheapo standby Hotel-Pension Pariser Eck has traded in its old-fashioned (read: dated) décor for a look that is decidedly more youthful. Its name may have changed too (it’s now the Berlin City Lounge Hostel & Guesthouse) but one thing’s stayed the same: The establishment continues to provide unpretentious rooms at low rates on Pariserstrasse near the Ku'damm.

Rooms

Now a pension-hostel hybrid, the Berlin City Lounge offers a mix of private rooms (which sleep one to six people) and six-bed mixed dorms. Either way, rooms are mostly functional with elements of funky: Think Ikea-style furnishings with stylish touches like bright, multi-colored walls and fun lounge chairs. Beds have mostly metal frames (bunks in the dorm rooms), but there are a few with low, modern faux-wooden bases. High ceilings and parquet floors finish the airy look.

Some (but not all) guest rooms have a television, and some private rooms are large enough to have a small sitting area. Dorm rooms also offer lockers.

Bathrooms

All Berlin City Lounge rooms, whether “hostel” or “guesthouse,” have an in-room shower and shared toilets. The facilities are simple but adequate, although some guests say they could be cleaner (as is often the case with shared bathrooms).

Hotel

There’s one aspect of the Pariser Eck that a facelift and name change did not alter: The place is still a cheerful, super-friendly spot.

Breakfast is available for an additional charge. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the Berlin City Lounge also offers a free Internet station. Note that reception closes at 6 p.m. (be sure to notify the hostel in advance if you will be arriving after that time).
