The City Hotel Matyas, part of the modern Taverna Hotels & Resorts chain, is a bit of a splurge, but worth it. Not only does it feature loads of amenities in a central location, but the hotel shares the same ter (street) with Inner City Parish church, a tourist attraction for centuries.
The Matyas' 85 rooms are spread out on five floors inside a gorgeous neoclassical building. Furnishings aren't exactly groundbreaking. Light, Danish design knockoffs and teal window drapes and bed covers give off a dentist's office feel. Triangular-shaped tables in pale, faux wood are offset with matching chairs. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with showers.
So what's so splurge-worthy here? Amenities include a minibar, satellite television, and a hearty breakfast, which is covered by the nightly rate. The morning buffet is served inside the hotel's own famous traditional Hungarian Matthias Cellar restaurant. Open to the public later in the evening, the picturesque space offers up local cuisine served alongside live Gypsy music. Stained-glass windows and vaulted ceilings are exquisite.

About the City Matyas neighborhood
Inside what used to be the old city wall, Belváros is located in the heart of Pest, Budapest's flat, eastern side. Small streets, constructed over a millennium ago, include the famous pedestrian Váci utca as well as the picturesque Belgrád Rakpart running along the east side of the Danube. Packed with tourist sights, including the Inner City Parish, the gorgeous Párizsi Udvar arcade, and the Klotild Palaces, the area is also, unfortunately, a haven for crimes both ordinary and extraordinary. Overpriced restaurants, souvenir shops, and female honey traps ply their wares.
