The three-star City Hotel Mátyás, part of the modern Taverna Hotels & Resorts chain, is a bit of a splurge, but worth it. Not only does it feature loads of amenities in a central location, but the hotel shares the same ter (street) as Inner City Parish church, a tourist attraction for centuries.

The Mátyás's 85 rooms are spread out on five floors inside a gorgeous neoclassical building. Furnishings aren't exactly groundbreaking. Light, Danish design knockoffs and teal window drapes and bed covers give off a dentist's office feel. Triangular-shaped tables in pale, faux-wood are offset with matching chairs. All rooms have en suite bathrooms with showers.

So what's so splurge-worthy here? Amenities include a minibar, satellite television, and a hearty breakfast, which is covered by the nightly rate. The morning buffet is served inside the hotel's own famous traditional Hungarian Matthias Cellar restaurant.

Open to the public later in the evening, the picturesque space offers up local cuisine served alongside live Gypsy music. Stained-glass windows and vaulted ceilings are exquisite.
