Minutes away from the busy downtown life, the 16-room Thanet Hotel is a third generation family-run affair situated in a Georgian mansion near the University of London. Since the 17th century, this place has been hosting intellectuals, and it's still surrounded by bustling student life. Though prices push way beyond normal Cheapo limits, the EC team couldn't resist recommending a place with so much character.
The Thanet underwent renovation in 2003, and as a result, the paint, carpet, beds covers, and curtains still feel new. Overall the decor is old-fashioned and frilly -- in a pleasant sort of way. Dark-wood furnishings are simple and clean, and rooms have the inherent charm of high ceilings and the occasional (formerly functioning) fireplace. Back rooms face a garden that boasts beautiful flowers in season.
