The three-star Thanet Hotel is a third generation family-run affair situated in a Georgian mansion near the University of London and minutes away from busy downtown.

Rooms

Overall the décor in the Thanet Hotel’s 16 rooms is old-fashioned and frilly—in a pleasant sort of way. Furnishings are made of dark wood, and the simple, clean rooms have inherent charm, with high ceilings and the occasional (decorative) fireplace.

All rooms are equipped with a television, phone and coffee and tea facilities. Back rooms face a garden that boasts beautiful flowers in season.

The private bathrooms are small but adequate, with a shower, toiletries and a hair dryer.

Hotel

Since the 17th century, this area has been hosting intellectuals, and it’s still bustling with student life. No. 8 Bedford Place (now the Thanet Hotel), has a long history, and has been home to dukes, earls and Royal navy commanders. Today, its rates push beyond normal Cheapo limits, but the hotel is a good pick for travelers looking to splurge on character.

The folks at the Thanet are quite proud of their breakfast spread, included in the room rate. Wi-Fi is free in the public areas, but only reaches some guest rooms (ask ahead if it is important for you to have Wi-Fi in your room). Note that the Thanet does not have an elevator.
