Located in the chic Marais neighborhood on the border of the third and fourth arrondissements, the Place des Vosges is the oldest square in Paris. It is considered the prototype for other planned squares throughout the city.
It’s a beautifully rendered space, most notable for its ornate brick and stone arcades, gardens, fountains and former royal palaces. The square has boasted some famous residents during the past few centuries. Most notably, Victor Hugo lived and worked for more than 15 years at No. 6 Place des Vosges. Today, the building is a museum devoted to his memory (and its permanent collection is free to visit).
