Sandra runs the 23-room Locanda Silva near Santa Maria Formosa and not far from San Marco. The Silva’s rooms, with and without private bath, are a sensible and un-fussy choice.
Although the building dates from the 17th century, the interior is all mid-century modern, and is bright and airy. After days of “Venetian” décor, the Silva’s 20th-century design struck us as refreshingly straightforward and clean. The reception and staircase feature modern canvases painted by Sandra’s father Ettore.
Rooms are simple, with modern furnishings (unadorned wooden beds, tables and chairs). Décor is limited to brightly painted walls hung with the occasional print. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning and, notably, without a TV.
All but six of the rooms have private bathrooms that are period pieces in themselves: 1970’s-era green tile and Formica, outfitted with showers and hairdryer. They’re in great shape. The six rooms without facilities are cheaper, have sinks and share spotless baths in the hallway.
Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in a sunny room overlooking a canal that features more of Ettore’s modern pieces.

About the Locanda Silva neighborhood
The largest of the six "sestieri", Castello is divided into Castello and Castello Alto. Castello Alto borders San Marco and is home to innumerable cheap sleeps as well as the Arsenale Naval Museum. The largely residential area doesn't boast much in the way of dining or nightlife, but its vicinity to San Marco and its overall convenient location makes Castello Alto a savvy alternative for budget-minded Cheapos.
