Hotel Fivos, located right on busy Athinas, is a half step up from a backpackers haunt. From the moment you enter Fivos, you’ll have the impression that you’re in vibrant international student land.
We’ll illustrate by way of surveying the two receptionists on duty when we visited: a hipster Hungarian lass apparently fluent in two million languages, and an English lad taking a break from working for an ecological non-governmental agency in Kenya. Climb the stairs and spend one minute in the lounge, with its maps of Greece, bookshelves, vending machine, and Internet station, and the Fivos budget-minded post-backpacker vibe will make itself felt.
Fivos room summary: basic, not grubby. The mood may be all watch-out-that-your-dreads-don't-plop-into-your-iced-coffee but the dorm rooms typically associated with such a backpacker vibe are nowhere to be found. All rooms—barring two singles—have private bathroom facilities. We like one room with dated but attractive headboards, basic furniture, and perky pillows. Bathrooms are adequate if not exactly delightful chambers. We loved the windows in this particular room as well. Perched up high, they made the room (already several floors up) feel like it was in a tower.
The location, extremely close to the Monastiraki metro station, is a real plus. It’s also on bustling Athinas, so be sure to request a room at the back if you need a quiet place to lay your head.
