Budapest's Downtown Hostel is run by hip staff with lots of in-the-know information. The very reasons carefree tourists love The Downtown Hostel are the very same reasons that guests with fussy expectations run away screaming. Let's explain. Guests walk around in pajamas and hostel staff members have been known to hang out with hostelers after hours. Get our drift?
That caveat aside, the Downtown is quite simply fun. It offers among the very cheapest beds in town. That these beds are also remarkably clean provides yet another selling point.
Dorm-style room walls are painted yellow and orange. Bunks are wooden and window shades are made of bamboo. Next to the parquet flooring, the rooms have a warm, earthy feel. Colorful tapestries spice up otherwise large, stark walls. Bathroom fixtures appear to be relatively new. We spied one particularly large bathroom with a shower.
The kitchen was also recently remodeled. The fully-stocked cooking space also functions as the common area and TV lounge.
Downtown Hostel is central, just a ten minute walk to Kálvin tér Metro station and the coffeehouse-lined Ráday utca.
One word of warning. The hostel has designated smoking areas. That said, the friendly receptionist who showed us around had the courage to admit that non-smokers have come to him with ventilation complaints.
