Malaysian persuasion is the name of the game at this Bayswater hotel, part of an international chain of hotels with properties in Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Khartoum, and Bali. But despite its name and its far-flung sister properties, the Holiday Villa Hotel London has a clientele that's more business class than tourist class. However, the location is ideal, and the prices are right for travelers willing to inch toward the edge of a splurge.
A modern hotel packed with numerous goodies, the Holiday Villa is located a few minutes from Hyde Park. We found the reception area to be rather on the dramatic side with sparkling chandelier pendants above the desk and bronze and gold tones characterizing the lobby furnishings. The whole place was buzzing with activity during our last visit (fall 2005). While waiting for our tour, we befriended a gentleman in the lobby who didn't hesitate to recommend the hotel. "I send clients here all the time," he said.
All 100 rooms at the Holiday Villa are decorated in standard '80s hotel garb: the en suite quarters were filled with tan wood, mahogany chairs, and glass-and-brass tables! But little touches such as flowers and bright throw pillows give them some warmth.
The Holiday Villa's facilities include Charlie's, an on-site bar, and Lagenda, a Malaysian and Chinese restaurant serving satay and laksa among other very not-British fare. A pool, Jacuzzi, and sauna are available for guest use. The spa is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and offers massages, facials, and pedicures. Oh, and what would Southeast Asian influence mean without a little karaoke action? Prepare to sing your heart out.
