Cheap hotels near Washington Square Park in New York, United States
One of the city’s most famous and beloved green spaces, Washington Square Park is a handsome landscaped park located in the Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village.
Used as a burial ground in the 1800s, the park next served as a military parade ground and finally became a public park in 1827. Today, it’s a sometimes protest venue, a popular meeting and hang-out spot for students, and a stage for outdoor performers. You’ll also find a smattering of hardcore chess players busy competing here, as well.
The square is surrounded by Greek revival mansions, many the property of New York University (which is located in buildings surrounding the park and throughout the Village). The monumental arch that sits to the park’s northern side was erected in 1889 to honor the centennial anniversary of President George Washington’s inauguration. It’s modeled after Paris’ Arc de Triomphe.
