Getting Into Rome

The Airports

Most international flights to Rome arrive at Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (also called "Fiumicino"), which is located 32km (20 miles) west of the city. A second airport, Ciampino, serves domestic as well as some international flights. Ciampino is located 15km (9 miles) southeast of the center of Rome.

To take the train to downtown Rome, follow the signs at the airport marked "Treni." The Leonardo Express is a nonstop train that leaves the Fiumicino airport station for Stazione Roma Termini, Rome's main rail station. The train runs every half hour, from 6:37 a.m. until 11:37 p.m. and takes about 35 minutes. Tickets cost €9.50 and can be purchased from one of the (sometimes unreliable) ticket machines or at the train ticket office. If you're pressed for time, you can buy a ticket on the train for €11.

Another option, especially good for visitors staying in Trastevere, is to take one of the local trains, Orte or Fara Sabina. A journey on either train lasts 45 minutes and costs €5. Orte and Fara Sabina trains depart from the airport station for Rome's Stazione Tiburtina. At Tiburtina, you can catch the B subway line. Stops on the B line include Trastevere and Ostiense.

Another way to get into the center of Rome from Fiumicino airport is on the Terravision express bus. The Terravision bus connects Fiumicino airport to Rome's Termini Station. Tickets cost €7 one-way and €12 round-trip. Visit the Terravision booking engine to book bus tickets in advance.

Taxis between Fiumicino and center city destinations will cost you a whopping €60 per ride, not including supplementary charges for luggage, nighttime travel, and Sunday travel.

From Ciampino

To get into the heart of Rome from Ciampino, take the CoTral bus for €2. It departs from outside the terminal every half an hour and takes you to Anagnina, the terminus of Metro line A, in 20 minutes. From line A, you can take the subway (for €1) to Stazione Termini, Rome's main train station.

Another way to get into the center of Rome from Ciampino airport is on the Terravision express bus. The Terravision bus connects Ciampino airport to Rome's Termini Station. Frequency of service varies according to flight arrivals and departures, but buses typically arrive every 20 minutes or so.Tickets cost €8 one-way and €14 round-trip. Visit the Terravision booking engine to book bus tickets in advance.

Taxis between Ciampino and the center of Rome cost around €30. Extra charges for luggage, nighttime travel, and Sunday travel should be taken into account.

From the "Termini" Train Station

Rome has two main train stations located within the city limits. The main train station, Stazione Termini, is situated in the northeast corner of the historic center of the city ("centro storico"). You will most likely arrive and depart from Termini. The other station, Stazione Tiburtina, services a few long-distance trains as well as trains from Fiumicino from its northeastern location.

Outside the ticketing hall of Termini, you will find Piazza del Cinquecentro. This massive square is home to multiple taxi stands and the city's major bus terminal.
