Paw, the smiling gentlemen at reception, was the one to break the "bad" news: "I have to be honest with you," he said, "we’re really more of a hostel than a hotel." Ha! Guess he didn't know who he was talking to.
Budget accommodation is what the Hotel Jørgensen is all about. A stay in this white stucco building is ideal for backpackers as well as friends and families with better things to spend money on than a posh place to sleep, such as the surrounding bars and restaurants. Just south of the Botansik Have, Købenshavns Universitet, and various other parklands, these quarters are right across the water from the trendy Norrebro. In other words, this is the perfect spot to find tranquility away from the downtown hustle.
The Jørgensen's 44 rooms come as singles, doubles, and dorm rooms that sleep up to 12 people. The hotel-like rooms are furnished in blond wood and wicker, with tiny little lamps and an overall scarcity of décor. But you didn't come to Copenhagen to stare at a hotel room, did you? Neither did we. (Oh wait, that's right, we did ...) Interior rooms face a garden, and some singles and doubles have a private bathroom. Air-conditioning is also available in some of the rooms, as well as bathtubs.
The Family rooms, which sleep four to five people (DKK170 per person), and the larger dorms have blue metal bunk beds and feel much more like a hostel than a budget hotel. All have shared facilities, and, unlike in the hotel-style rooms, sheets and towels are not included in the price.
The included breakfast is above expectations and includes a healthy selection of cereals, meats, cheeses, breads, and juice.
