Hotel Astor is a true four-star hotel, with all the amenities associated with such a rating. In spite of this, Astor manages to keep its rates very reasonable. Why, you ask? We think it may have something to do with the fact that Schillerstrasse is a touch seedy in patches. In fact, a series of sex shops can be found pretty much right outside.
Despite the Astor’s best efforts to create a hybrid of folksy and modern, the overriding aesthetic of Astor’s 46 rooms is corporate, not cozy. The lobby feels like a fancy 1980s living room, with striped couches and an enormous ship model on display in the window. The ‘80s spirit extends outside, to dated awnings. Rooms feature neutral tones, low beds, and lots of rustic wood furniture.
Hotel Astor’s real appeal lies in its relatively affordable rates. It’s difficult to find a double room in a four-star business hotel anywhere in Germany for less than €100 per night. The Astor’s many little perks—free sauna access and free bicycle rental among others—just solidify its status as a good value. Its three nonsmoking floors, always a find in smoker-friendly Germany, are another plus.
