In the hotel-crowded Bahnhof Sud area, lodgings are not hard to find. But walk for a few minutes, and the throng of tourists thins a bit. Hotel Schweiz sits on the periphery of the hotel district. Squeezed in between Turkish vegetable and fruit markets, the hotel feels like it's in a different neighborhood altogether.
Hotel Schweiz' 57 rooms are on the simple side. The main selling point of the rooms, design-wise, is their gorgeous pale wood furniture. Walls painted in light hues complement the furniture nicely, offering up an almost Scandinavian effect. The tiny "wellness center," consisting of an infrared sauna and a terrace on the sixth floor, is an intriguing plus. Infrared saunas, which operate on infrared light and not water, have a much lower ambient temperature than traditional saunas. They're the sort of thing one reads about in the "Robb Report," that guidebook to upper-class living.
We were also really impressed with the Hotel Schweiz staff, who we found to be among the friendliest in Munich. Plus at least one Schweiz receptionist wears really cool glasses. Hotel Schweiz! The songs we sing of you are not in a neutral key.
