The Hotel Thérèse won us over at the first sight (and smell) of aromatherapy candles glowing brightly at the reception desk. Located on a narrow, crooked street by the same name (just off Avenue de l'Opéra) this splurge-worthy three-star boutique hotel rubs elbows with the Louvre, Jardin des Tuileries, Palais Royal and Place Vendôme, along with a string of Japanese restaurants on nearby rue Sainte-Anne.

After spending two evenings (undercover) at the Hotel Thérèse, we succumbed to the whole three-star shebang, from its swanky oak lobby with bar and secluded (and stocked) reading nooks, to the rack of courtesy umbrellas. Then there are the vibrant hallways reminiscent of the saturated sets in Jacque Demy’s Les Parapluies de Cherbourg. It’s an eye-full.

Beaming with natural light, the Thérèse’s 43 rooms exude a sweet, gentle blend of classic Parisian and refined contemporary décor. From floor to ceiling, the furnishings are brand spanking new, and all the rooms are outfitted with desks, overstuffed chairs and sofas. Each room also has a flat-screen television, safe box and fully stocked minibar. The bathrooms are also new-fangled and clean.

With the exception of the three deluxe suites, most of the rooms in this historical building are stylish but on the small side. So, if room size matters, you will not find happiness at the Saint Thérèse (then again, large rooms are few and far between at nearly all reasonably priced Parisian hotels). When you splurge at the Thérèse, you’re paying for the “little extras” (read: perks galore!) and fabulous location, along with priceless intangibles like ambiance, history and incredible energy.

There is a free Internet station, and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Breakfast is offered €13, or €4.50 for the “express” option.
