We shouldn't fault Amaryllis Hotel for the sponge painting job in the reception. We also shouldn't fault the hotel for carrying the fancy painting effect into the rooms themselves. In fact, we look forward to the day when sponge painting will be seen as the height of cool, retro innovation.
But seriously, we dig this place's affordability and plain jane simplicity. Amaryllis Hotel—not to be confused with the Amaryllis Inn, owned by the same management team—is simple. It's got the standard tiled floors seen in countless budget and mid-range hotels in Athens. Yes, the nectarine-against-pink palette is a bit much, and furnishings are both basic and mismatched. But the beds are lovely, the floors are spic-and-span, and the management appears to be quite efficient. Plus, Amaryllis sports a gorgeous, roomy art deco bar/lounge.
Amaryllis is located close to Omonia Square. Although not our favorite 'hood in Athens, Omonia Square is certainly convenient to public transportation and shopping alike.
