In its prime location in a busy piazza, mere steps from the San Lorenzo Market, Hotel Palazzo Benci is a splurge-worthy little treat of a hotel.
Housed in a 16th-century mansion that's been restored today, a fancy, marble-floored lobby and art deco bar and lounge set a glamorous first impression as does the professional staff.
Mid-sized rooms come in pleasant shades of teal green, with clean-cut, basic furniture. While the lobby and garden are bright and light-filled, rooms are more homey, but with all the standard amenities (air-conditioning, refrigerator etc). The overarching motif is at times a bit stuffy, though in a sweet grandmotherly way. Bathrooms feature sparkling blue tiles. Some even have bathtubs, a big plus after days of shuttling across cobblestones.
The inner garden is, hands down, the best thing this three-star has going for it. It's a green oasis of lush tranquility in a super-central and thus highly traveled hood.

About the Hotel Palazzo Benci neighborhood
North of the train station, and decidedly the most colorful neighborhood in Florence, San Lorenzo is home to many of the city's foreign population, many of whom man the stands at the bustling local market. The area is the cheapest place to shop and snack in the center of the city. Peruse the stands wisely for real leather bags and accessories, and be on the look out for fakes. The streets around the market are home to kebab stands and Asian markets galore, as well as cheap clothing and shoe shops. San Lorenzo is also home to Fiaschetteria-Trattoria Mario, the real deal as far as authentic Florentine eating goes, miraculously unruined by fame. There's not one guidebook or magazine that hasn't plastered a logo on the front door.
