The Cartref House—formerly the James & Cartref House—is a cheerful, family-run bed-and-breakfast about a five-minute walk west of Victoria Station and a 10-minute walk south of Buckingham Palace.
Sharon and Derek James have been operating the B&B for almost two decades. (They used to own a second townhouse across the street, but recently slimmed down their operation.) Their friendly son Matt was kind enough to show us around during our visit, as Mr. James was busy interviewing potential housekeepers in the cheerful, "winter garden" breakfast room.
The Cartref has a variety of homey rooms, from singles on up to family-style rooms that would suit parents with small children. Décor is simple and cheerful with floral patterned bedspreads and matching curtains. Amenities are the usual, no-frills B&B affairs: tea kettles and small televisions. All rooms are en suite.
In the morning, you can choose between a full English or continental breakfast. Guests get their own key to the front door. The Cartref House is entirely nonsmoking.
