"What an unusual name for a hotel," was our first comment to the smiling ladies at reception. They agreed, laughing, and admitted that they had no idea how their hotel's crazy name had come into existence.
Name aside, Creatif Hotel Elephant is hands down our favorite hotel in Munich. Its 44 rooms are simple and airy. Hardwood floors are greeted by white walls and well-placed splashes of color, such as the magenta curtains. Furniture is fresh and Ikeaesque. Bathrooms alternate white tiles with bright, spunkily-hued tiles, playfully continuing the burst-of-color motif on display in the bedrooms. The washbasins are those nifty rectangular ones we associate with hip restaurant washrooms, not affordable hotels. Modern, chic, and a bargain to boot. What's not to love?
Creatif Elephant is part of the Eckelmann Hotels chain, a very small grouping of reasonable hotels in central Munich. Creatif Hotel Elephant's clientele impressively ranges from backpackers to businesspeople and attests to the hotel's wide appeal. The location, minutes by foot north of the main train station, is another plus.
Lest you think we've gone all uncritical, we do have this to say: the orange hallway carpet is in need of a serious rethink.
