Columbus Studios, a modest budget hotel, is two blocks from the American Museum of Natural History and down the street from Central Park.
Rooms are large with beds covered with big, fluffy comforters and pillows. Funky mirrors, sheer blue curtains, and prints of abstract earth elements add life to otherwise dreary walls.
Large streetside windows overlook a school playground, and windows in the rear face a courtyard. Some rooms have an adjacent common area, though they are entirely unfurnished. Rooms with mini-fridges and microwaves cost extra. The front desk can supply a microwave in a room without one. Kitchen amenities look brand new.
