The Jazz on the Park hostel, just off of Central Park West, offers impressive artwork and a fun atmosphere in addition to simple to budget accommodations.
The dorms are painted with brilliant pigments. Private rooms are available at a second property on 105th Street. Here the vibe isn't quite as exuberant, although the room rates should make any Cheapo's heart leap. Rooms are virtually amenity-free but all are air-conditioned.
The walls are adorned with pieces donated after in-house exhibits or used in lieu of payment by a few former guests. And the café is the hippest we've happened upon during our Manhattan hostel search: bright and multi-colored with exposed brick and plenty of bossa-nova beats (as well as a "BYOB" policy).
The hostel has a young atmosphere—and is consequently a bit noisy. There is a TV lounge, and group activities, including weekly pub crawls, are aplenty.
Breakfast is included, as is Wi-Fi in the common areas.
Note: According to previous guests, Jazz on the Park has a confusing reservation policy; make sure to call ahead to confirm your booking.

About the Jazz on the Park neighborhood
Located west of Central Park, the Upper West Side is a largely residential area, filled with tall apartment buildings, stately brownstones, and families. The area is home to Lincoln Center, the American Museum of Natural History, and Columbia University. One of its greatest attributes may be its borders: you're never more than a few blocks away from either Central Park or leisurely Riverside Park. Famous Harlem, whose importance as a historically African-American neighborhood cannot be matched, begins north of Morningside Heights. Despite its dangerous reputation, Harlem has become much safer... and much more popular with tourists.
