Don’t be confused by the name—the YMCA Vanderbilt Hotel is not a hotel (nor, really, would a Vanderbilt have stayed here). In fact, shared bathrooms and overall no-frills facilities make it much more like a hostel with private rooms. Its location is incredibly central, though, making the YMCA Vanderbilt an option for unfussy guests looking for a simple, comfortable bed.
Pros: Convenient location. Cheap.
Cons: Shared bathrooms are not in the best condition. Inconsistent service. No Wi-Fi in rooms.
As you’d expect, the YMCA Vanderbilt’s 370 rooms (with either single or bunk beds) are small. But they’re clean and very comfortable for a hostel. All have cable television, air conditioning and a desk. Some even offer a mini-fridge.
Bathrooms on each floor are shared, and towels and linens are provided. As is often the case in hostels, they aren’t the cleanest, and for the amount of rooms on each floor there might not be enough of them either.
The YMCA Vanderbilt lacks common space (except for bathrooms), and therefore feels more like an apartment building than a hostel. Guests get free access to the gym, track and two pools, which is a nice bonus. Laundry facilities are also available.
Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby only. There is no curfew.

Midtown E-Murray Hill, New York, United States
About the Vanderbilt YMCA neighborhood
Midtown East begins at Fifth Avenue and works east toward the water, encompassing the residential Murray Hill neighborhood on its way. More business-oriented than Midtown West, Midtown East is home to many noteworthy sights, including Grand Central Terminal, the United Nations, the Chrysler Building and St. Patrick's Cathedral. This area is also great for shopping, with Saks Fifth Avenue, Takashimaya, Chanel, Burberry, Calvin Klein … Basically, if it isn't in Midtown East, then it's a few blocks north in the Upper East Side.
