The trendy three-star Hotel Europe Saint Severin fits the bill if you're looking for a comfortable and incredibly convenient option in the heart of the Latin Quarter.
Pros: Stylish and well kept rooms. Incredible location just off Place Saint-Michel. Romantic respite. Air conditioning.
Cons: Books up quickly. Can be fairly expensive. Location could be “too touristic” for some.
Decked out with candelabras, original art, and antiques, the polished but handsome Hôtel Europe Saint Séverin flaunts a romantic medieval vibe in the bullseye of the Latin Quarter. From here, you’re a quick walk to central Paris’s big sights, including Notre Dame, Luxembourg Gardens, and the Louvre. Unfortunately, room rates are usually too rich for our Cheapo blood, but we're keeping it on the list, as rates sometimes drop down into Cheapo territory.
The Saint Severin's 59 rooms are attractively appointed with wooden beams and exposed stone, and feature modern headboards, night tables and desks. Rooms are well equipped with air conditioning, a flat-screen television, telephone, mini-fridge and free Wi-FI. The immaculate bathrooms sparkle, and bathtubs are available.
Insider tip: Two (slightly pricier) rooms on the 2nd and 5th floor have small private balconies—prime people-watching spots especially at twilight. That said, light sleepers should book a room facing the courtyard. (Make special requests in advance, and book early, as the hotel books up quickly.)
Another word or two about the hotel’s location is justified. The spot, less than a block from the Place Saint-Michel, will wow most of our readers by its sheer convenience. It’s minutes by foot to Notre Dame, the shops and restaurants of the Latin Quarter, and the Metro (and RER to Charles de Gaulle). Furthermore, a Vélib’ station is located just outside the hotel’s door.
However, others will turn up their noses at the touristic vibe of the neighborhood. Most of the restaurants nearby are made for (and cater almost exclusively to) tourists, replete with barkers luring you in (and offering free drinks) and crashing plates. “Opa!” These readers might want to consider a quieter spot, like the nearby Hotel des 3 Colleges.
Still, the Saint Severin's location is undeniably fun, lively, and always easy to access. You’re literally in the center of Paris.
A breakfast buffet is offered for €12. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
